FILM & BEER SERIES:

Bistro Bohem will present the film A Night at Karlstein (Noc na Karlštejně) as part of the ongoing Film and Beer Series on June 20, 2017, at 7 pm. In this classic comedy, King Charles has prohibited women from entering the castle, but his young wife misses him and decides to dress as a page and sneak inside.

About the Film:

A Night at Karlstein | Noc na Karlštejně

Director: Zdeněk Podskalský, 1974, 85 min., Czech w/English subtitles

King Charles IV (Vlastimil Brodský) makes a decree that no women can stay at the castle. He builds Karlstein as a fortress to guard the crown jewels and as a place of meditation and relaxation. Two royal guests, however, can't believe that there are no women at the castle and snoop about in search of a skirt to chase - and they just might find one. Unbeknownst to the king, the queen (Jana Brejchová) deeply misses her husband, going against the royal ban and disguising herself as a page with the support of the archbishop. A series of comedic scenarios unfold as another woman, Alena, bets her father that she can stay the night at the castle so that she can marry her fiancé. The film is one of the most popular Czech musicals, based on the play of the same name written by Jaroslav Vrchlický.
