Book Talk: The Emperor and the Peasant

April 15, 2018 @ 2:00 pm

Free

The Emperor and the Peasant: Two Men at the Start of the Great War and the End of the Habsburg Empire, by Kenneth Janda, is about World War I and Slovak and Czech emigration to the United States. This history, presented in alternating chapters as two intertwined narratives, juxtaposes the experiences of Emperor Franz Josef and Samuel Mozolák–a Slovak peasant and grandfather of the author’s wife.  Mozolák emigrated to New York, started a family, returned to Slovakia, and died on the Eastern Front. The book will be available for purchase with a book signing to follow the lecture.

The book can be bought in advance from the Czechoslovak Genealogical Society at https://www.cgsi.org/store/item/310775.

Kenneth Janda is Payson S. Wild Professor Emeritus of Political Science at Northwestern University.
