Alfons Mucha: Shaping The Czech Identity

May 31, 2018 7:00 PM - Jun 22, 2018

The exhibit examines the role of the artist at times of political change, presenting examples of material created by Mucha for his country, culminating in his most significant work the Slav Epic.

Art Nouveau Master, Alfons Mucha, in a New Exhibition at the Czech Center New York

The Mucha Foundation, the Czech Center New York, and the Permanent Mission of the Czech Republic to the United Nations, are proud to present Alfons Mucha: Shaping the Czech Identity, which opens Thursday 31st, 2018, at the Czech Center New York Gallery.

This exhibition celebrates the centenary of the birth of Czechoslovakia in 1918 by exploring Mucha’s contribution to the nation’s struggle for national identity and self-determination.

A passionate patriot and keen political thinker, Alfons Mucha always regarded his art as a means to serve his homeland.  After a successful career as a leading exponent of the Art Nouveau style in Paris and America, Mucha returned to his native Czech lands in 1910 to paint his magnum opusthe Slav Epic, a cycle of twenty monumental paintings depicting Czech and Slavic history.  The Slav Epic was presented as a gift to the nation in 1928 on the tenth anniversary of its independence.

The exhibition, curated by the Mucha Foundation's curator Tomoko Sato, will feature Mucha’s Slav Epic, represented via slideshow installation, along with select writings from the Mucha Archive to lead to an understanding of the ultimate message of this work.

In addition, the exhibition also includes approximately 20 works from the Mucha Trust Collection and will examine Mucha’s ideas on Czech identity—a principle theme of his art—and how it is manifested in a range of works including lithography, drawing, photography, as well as the first postage stamps and bank notes for the newly independent Czechoslovak state, which were designed by Mucha.

The Mucha Foundation is an independent, non-profit making charity devoted to preserving and promoting the work of Alfons Mucha. It was founded in 1992 by Mucha's grandson John Mucha and daughter-in-law and Czech-Scottish composer Geraldine Muchová. Over the years, the Mucha Foundation has organized over 40 exhibitions of Mucha's art around the world, introducing over 4,000,000 people to his work, many of whom have subsequently visited the Czech Republic as tourists.

The Mucha Foundation is also the creative force behind the Mucha Museum in Prague, which is the second-most visited museum in the Czech Republic.

Alfons Mucha: Shaping the Czech Identity opens Thursday, May 31st and runs until Friday, June 22nd.
